John Dorian, J.D. (Zach Braff) to friends, is a boyishly fine-looking, self-deprecatingly amusing, appealing guy who would be self-assured if he only recognised his assets. Three years of medical school have prepared J.D. for his first day as an intern at Sacred Heart Hospital — but he has his uncertainties. As J.D. is hurled into the disorderly domain of hospital life, we not only get to see the offbeat types that he rans into, but as well discover the amusing commentary of thoughts flowing through J.D.’s mind.

By J.D.’s side is his dearest friend since college, the good-looking and surefooted Chris Turk (Donald Faison). As a new surgical medical intern, Turk swaggers about with a gregarious and cocky behaviour that conceals a terror that he only admits to J.D. Both hombres at first have the hots for their appealing fellow intern, Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), but J.D. Promptly discovers her beauty is only exceeded by a super- competitive attitude.

Conducting the interns training are those with more medical experience — which at this time is pretty much everybody. Dr. Robert Kelso (Ken Jenkins), Chief of Medicine, wishes the interns to believe they can bet on him — until they really need something. On the other side of the personality spectrum is Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley), a juggernaut of a man light on patience. However, below his crusty bearing hides a genuinely good guy that J.D. learns to abide by. Keeping an eye on the interns with a vitriolically pesky, but caring conduct, is Nurse Carla Espinoza (Judy Reyes), a woman who is maternal and sexy at the same time.
